data without blocking. If the receiver misbehaves or crashes, the sender won t be affected directly and may not even know about the receiver s problem. The shared delivery model provides a built-in level of security, because the sender and receiver generally have no access to each other s local data. Moreover, in many cases, the shared resource can act as a buffer, allowing the system to function even if the sender and receiver aren t running at the same time. If the receiver is not present when a notification is sent, the shared resource can maintain the notification until the receiver reads it later. All shared resource protocols work in the same conceptual way: The sender writes data to the resource, and the receiver reads it. But there are differences that arise in the details, depending on what type of shared resource is used. In the following sections, I ll explore each type of resource in more detail.

The transportable tablespaces feature applies regardless of the platform of the source and target databases; that is, you can transport tablespaces from a Windows platform, for example, to a UNIX platform and vice versa. However, there is one requirement you must meet in order to perform cross-platform transport of tablespaces: the endian format of the datafiles in the source and target databases must be identical.

Note Endian format refers to the byte ordering of file systems. Endian format could be one of two types: big or little. If the endian formats of the source and target database are identical, everything you ve seen up to now is all you ll need to do to transport the tablespaces. However, if the endian formats are different, you must convert the endian format of the source datafiles, either before or after transporting the datafiles to the target server.

Files make it very easy to share data. When the sending and receiving processes are on the same machine and that machine has a file system, the implementation is straightforward. A na ve implementation might go something like this: The sender creates a file, writes a notification to it, and then closes the file. The receiver periodically checks for the existence of the file. When the file is detected, the receiver opens it, reads its contents, and then deletes the file. This type of design has a significant drawback: Once the sender has saved the notification in the file, it can t send any more files until the receiver processes and deletes the shared file. To overcome this problem, there are two solutions: 1. Use multiple shared files. 2. Append notifications to an existing file. To use multiple files, you could use a simple numbering scheme to generate unique filenames, such as name1, name2, and name 3. The scheme would restart the number sequence when it reaches a limit number. To use this approach, the sender and receiver would only need to agree on the numbering scheme. The collection of numbered files acts as a virtual notification queue. Both the sender and receiver need to maintain counters, indicating the next file number to use. Figure 3-4 shows the timing details.
